Is the Church Becoming 'A Pink Cadillac with Tail Fins'?Leonard Sweet is a Christian futurist. In his book "Postmodern Pilgrims: First Century Passion for the 21st Century World", he details the current state of the Church.
John White summarises Sweet's message: "The world is changing dramatically and the church is largely clueless about the change. The institutional church in the next twenty years will continue more and more to look like the pink Cadillac with the huge tail fins." "...the church's leaders have Alzheimer's disease. We still love them. We remember and pass on their stories. But they're living in another world.
They're totally clueless about the world that is actually out there. The problem is that they are captaining the ship." "The change (from modernism to postmodernism) can be summed up by the four letters E-P-I-C. Experiential - Participatory - Image-driven - Connected. Sweet is not saying that this change is necessarily good or bad - just that it's the way things are moving.
Here's a summary: From Rational to Experiential. Modernism emphasizes reason and observation. Postmodernism emphasizes revelation and experience. "In postmodern culture, there is no interest in a 'secondhand' God, a God that someone else (church tradition, church professionals, church bureaucracies) defines for us.
Each one of us is a Jacob become Israel: a wrestler with God. The encounter, the experience is the message." "From Representative to Participatory. Modernism says, "We need our leaders to make decisions for us." Postmodernism says, "We want to make our own decisions and to have multiple choices." "There are no more 'professional clergy' and pew-sitting laity...Postmoderns want interactive, immersive, 'in your face' participation in the mysteries of God." "From Word-based to Image-driven.
Modernism emphasizes words and propositional truth. Postmodernism emphasizes images and the power of metaphor.
"The lesson for the church is simple: images generate emotions, and people will respond to their feelings...The greatest image in the world, the image to which we draw people into a relationship, is the image of God in Jesus the Christ." "From Individual to Individual-Communal.
Modernism emphasizes the individual. Postmodernism emphasizes the individual in community. "The paradox is this: the pursuit of individualism has led us to this place of hunger for connectedness... The transiency of the culture requires that our community building and hospitality be more aggressive, not less; more premeditated, not haphazard."
"So, what must the church do to minister to this increasingly postmodern culture around us? Sweet suggests "that ministry in the twenty-first century has more in common with the first century than with the modern world that is collapsing all around us."

BBC Profiles Pastor Sunday Adelaja"My whole mission in the Ukraine is to impose God on the whole society." Pastor Sunday Adelaja.BBC Radio 4’s ongoing Crossing Continents documentary series looks this week at a pair of religion stories; the second segment of the programme introduces us to Pastor Sunday Adelaja of Kiev:
Pastor Sunday Adelaja arrived in the Ukraine from Nigeria on a Soviet student scholarship in 1993.
Twelve years later he is the head of the "Embassy of God", the largest evangelical church in Europe, with flock of 25,000 Ukrainians in Kiev, and churches in 32 countries around the world, all originating from Ukraine.
Pastor Sunday, now 38 years old, claims that his church has baptised a million Ukrainians, and the segment begins with a baptismal service in the river Dnieper, where Prince Vladimir mass-baptised his citizens a thousand years ago. Adelaja has 700 Ukrainian pastors under him, with rehab centres and orphanages across the country. His congregation includes high-profile politicians, and he claims to receive a thousand new members a month. Plans are now underway for new a $10-20m building that would be like a 'sports palace'.

America's Christian HeritageAmerica was built on an idea, unlike other countries where ethnic heritage was the unifying factor. The idea that America's foundation rests on is every individual should be free to follow their destiny. My friends, where did our Founding Fathers get that idea? They got it from the Bible!
Consider these quotes from some of the men who shaped our nation:
"It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here." -- Patrick Henry
"The patriot who feels himself in the service of God, who acknowledges Him in all his ways, has the promise of Almighty direction, and will find His Word in his greatest darkness, a lantern to his feet and a lamp unto his paths, he will therefore seek to establish for his country in the eyes of the world, such a character as shall make her not unworthy of the name of, "A Christian Nation." -- Francis Scott Key
"Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers." -- John Jay, America's first Supreme Court Chief Justice
"While we are zealously performing the duties of good citizens and soldiers, we certainly ought not to be inattentive to the higher duties of religion. To the distinguished character of Patriot, it should be our highest Glory to laud the more distinguished Character of Christian." -- George Washington
"The highest glory of the American Revolution was this; it connected in one indissoluble bond the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity." -- John Q. Adams
Is our nation righteous? No, it isn't, we've fallen short of the ideals of the Founding Fathers. Our nation needs to repent of selfishness, pride, arrogance and materialism before we can truly experience the blessings of God again.
Research shows giving to churches has declinedGeorge Barna of
Barna Research Group released his latest survey concerning giving habits of Americans.
"Americans give away enormous sums of money every year. The annual survey of religious behavior conducted by The Barna Group shows that Americans continued that pattern of generosity in 2004, but that even though their giving to non-profit organizations and churches is significant, it is not increasing."
Barna said, "Churches receive the largest share of the money donated each year. In 2004, two-thirds of all adults (65%) donated some money to a church or other place of worship."
"After factoring in inflation, however, churches are actually getting about 2% less than the current value of the money contributed in 1999," Barna added.

Ukrainian believers march on Kiev for JesusJune 12th marked the 4th annual 'March for Jesus' in Kiev, Ukraine. Pastor Anatoliy Belonozhko informed me more than 50,000 Christians from every sect in Ukraine participated in the march on Independence Square, ground zero of last years '
Orange Revolution' in Ukraine.
Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant, Pentecostal and Charismatic believers march from 5 different directions, converging on the Square, worshipping, praying and calling on all of Ukraine to repent and serve God.
Pastor Belonozhko said heavy rain hampered the march and had the sun been shining, he estimated perhaps 100,000 believers would've marched.
I was blessed to participate in the first march for Jesus in Kiev, May of 2001. Estimates were 20,000 marchers from mostly the Embassy of God church participated.

Revival in Russia, Ukraine and Europe.
Having just returned from Europe, I've been thinking about two specific conversations I had with church leaders, Bishop Anatoliy Belonozhko of Ukraine and Pastor Andrij Stepanov of Poland.
Bishop Belonozhko, over dinner one night last week, told us of his plan to plant hundreds of new churches in Europe and other nations in the next few years. He is overseer of the churches and missionaries of the Embassy of God church in Kiev, Ukraine that was founded by Apostle Sunday Adelaja.
The week prior to that, Judy and I were in Poland ministering in Andrij and Maja Stepanov's church in Warsaw, Poland. Pastor Andrij told us of his desire to raise up, send out and support 50 new missionaries from his church in the next couple of years.
These are bold plans by men of vision and courage to obey the Lord with no thought for their own lives and well-being.
The plans of these two leaders remind me of the vision and prophecy Hudson Taylor, founder of China Inland Mission, received from the Lord.
In 1889, British missionary Taylor was on furlough in England. As he was preaching, he suddenly stopped and stood speechless, his eyes closed. When he began to speak again, he explained:
"I have seen a vision. I saw in this vision a great war that encompasses the world. I saw this war recess and then start again, actually being two wars. After this I saw much unrest and revolts that will affect many nations. I saw in some places spiritual awakenings. In Russia I saw there will come a general all-encompassing, national spiritual awakening, so great that there could never be another like it. From Russia, I saw the awakening spread to many European countries. Then I saw an all-out awakening, followed by the second coming of Christ."
Side note: Even though Ukraine is not specifically mentioned, it is a well known fact Kiev was considered center of Russia until last 150 years or so. My study of Ukrainian history revealed the roots of Russia are in Ukraine and only since the fall of communism 15 years ago has Ukraine been recognized as a soveriegn nation, seperate from Russia. So I believe as Hudson Taylor saw Russia, he also saw Ukraine in the vision.
Bishop Aristocoli’s prophecy over Russia. In the turbulent years preceding the 1917 revolution in Russia, when Europe was to pour out the abomination of communism on the land, a young aristocratic woman (later to become Mother Barbara, Abbess of the Russian Church of St Mary Magdalen on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem), used to visit a ‘holy’ man or ‘staretz’ in the Kremlin, Bishop Aristocoli. He prophesied many things about the End Times in Europe – and in Russia.
The Bishop foretold that Europe would be laid waste and Germany divided in two – that England would lose her Empire and colonies, and be on the verge of collapse, but be saved in the last hours through praying women.
About Russia, Bishop Aristocoli said, “An evil will shortly take Russia [the 1917 Communist Revolution] and wherever this evil comes rivers of blood will flow. It is not of the Russian soul, but an imposition on the Russian soul. It is a spirit from hell. But finally Russia will be free and from out of Russia believers will go forth and turn many nations to God.” The bishop said, “From the very earliest centuries we have had prophecies that rays of Gospel light will come from the East... The light over the whole world will be from Russia who suffered more than anybody... Russia will be completely reborn!”
Another side note: Ukraine suffered the highest casualties, military and civilian combined, of all nations involved in World War II. For the most part, the 'Eastern front' was fought on Ukrainian soil.
These words agree with Hudson Taylor’s vision.
I am more determined to increase our efforts, energy and resources to minister and proclaim the Gospel of the Kingdom in Ukraine, Poland, Belgium and wherever else the Lord will open doors for us to minister.
Would you consider the possibility of either going with us or helping send us to this strategic region of the world?
Poland and Ukraine trip report, June 2005.Judy and I just returned from Poland & Ukraine Friday night, we were gone 18 days, but it seemed like a lot longer.
We did 6 services in Warsaw Poland, with Judy helping me by teaching a session on customer service. I've continued to teach about business people being anointed by God to do business for the sake of the Kingdom. This message is well received in both Poland and Ukraine.
One young man gave a testimony on Sunday morning about how the Lord blessed him after I did the business seminar in the church this past February. He said when he attended the seminar, he was in debt and had no job. He said, "I heard and received from Pastor Tinney at the seminar."
Within a week, he got a job. A few days later, another company called him and hired him for a larger salary than the first. Then, another company contacted him and hired him away from the second company, for an even larger salary. A fourth company then contacted him and hired him for even larger salary. All this happened within about a month.
The young man finished the testimony by saying he had saved enough money to start his own small business and paid off his debt as well. To God be the Glory!
The church in Warsaw is one of the larger Full gospel churches in Poland. The pastor, Andriy Stepanov, told me there are only 30 Protestant churches in Warsaw, a city of more than 2 million people. Catholicism is the major player in the nation.
I've sensed from talking with him there is not the unity between the different churches in Poland as I've seen in Ukraine but Pastor Andrei desires it. The first morning we were there, he took me to a weekly pastors meeting. There were 7 pastors there and a couple of there wives. Different flavors of the faith were represented though, Charismatic, Pentecostal, Lutheran, Methodist and Baptist. It was interesting. During the prayer time, I was led to pray for one pastor who had declared he was experiencing strong discouragement in the ministry.
On Sunday afternoon, I went with Pastor Andriy and some others from his church in Warsaw to another city about and hour away. They have recently planted a church in this city and there were about 40 people present. As we worshipped, a very strong presence of the Lord entered the meeting and Pastor Andriy and I began to minister to each person individually. Some began to laugh with joy, others began to weep in His presence. The Lord gave us words of knowlege and prophetic utterance. A few fell to the floor as we ministered in the power of the Holy Spirit. Pastor Andriy asked me to preach on the businessman's anointing and I obeyed. It was an unusual anointing and the Lord spoke a word to me concerning another person that I'm looking forward to returning to see it fulfilled.
After 5 days in Poland, we flew into western Ukraine and spent 2 days in L'vov. We ministered to the leaders in the Embassy of God church we've been working with since the church was started in the fall of 2003. I think I've been in the city there
6-7 times to do business seminars. It was a great time, Judy had never visited this city, so she was able to meet all my friends there.
Interestingly, there are two brothers who've been converted in the church we work with and they are both wrestlers. Igor is 17 and is the Ukrainian national champion at 69kg class and last month finished 3rd in the European Championships at that weight class. His brother Roma is in the next weight class above and is the Ukrainian national champion. Both of them are in training for the next Olympics.
We then flew from L'vov to Kiev where we spent a couple days. We met with a pastor Sofia who has connections to the Prime Minister and President of Ukraine. We're praying she can get us audience with one or both of them to endorse our project of sending humanitarian aid to Ukraine. I preached a leaders meeting for the church I'm a member of in Kiev, again, teaching about business people being anointed for marketplace ministry.
On Friday, June 10th, we flew to Simferopol, Ukraine which is located on the Crimean peninsula which juts out into the Black Sea. We did 3 services on Saturday and the Sunday morning service. I'm just preaching this one message and the Lord is giving me more revelation each time I preach it. After the service was over on Sunday afternoon, Anton, pastor of the Embassy of god church and another couple drove us to the Black Sea where we spent the night and next day resting. The crashing of the surf
all night long was really beautiful to listen to. I took a picture of Judy with the sun setting in the Black Sea that I'm pretty proud of.
We flew back to Kiev on Tuesday for another couple days and one more leaders meeting. We took our pastors, Anatoliy and Nadya Belonozhko out for dinner when we returned to Kiev. There is a restaurant I like to frequent, Tequila House. They serve delicious Tex-Mex cuisine. Now I really like Ukrainian food and rarely do I crave "our" food when I'm over there. However, this is a nice restaurant with excellent ambiance and a nice treat to these pastors who would never frequent such a place. We spent a couple hours eating and talking, a great time of fellowship with excellent fajitas.
On Thursday afternoon, we flew from Kiev to London where we spent the night. Our flight left London for Chicago at 9:30am Friday morning, so we got up at 5:15am in order to get ready, catch the bus terminal then the train to the international
terminal. Friday was a long day, but we had smooth flights and finally got back to Grove about 8:30pm Friday evening.
We're tired but satisfied it was a fruitful trip. I'll be returning to Europe in mid-August. I've got meetings scheduled in Brussels, Belgium, G'dansk, Poland and L'vov, Ukraine over a 2 week period.
Ukraine trip updateI'm writing this from Simferopol, Ukraine. We spent 5 days in Warsaw with Pastors Andrei and Maja Stepanov. Powerful and anointed appointments with the Lord charactorized the meetings. I taught on the "Businessman's anointing" and the Lord blessed everyone.
On Monday, June 6th, we made the short flight to L'vov, Ukraine where we were met by Pastor Leysa and Sasha. We did two meetings with them, one to their business people and the other to their leaders. I'm continuing to preach from Isaiah 45 and Ezra 1.
We arrived in Kiev on June 8th and ministered to Bishop Anatoliy Belonozhko's leadership. Once again, Isaiah and Ezra was expounded upon and the Lord blessed with revelation.
We have three meetings tomorrow, 10am, 3pm, and 6pm. On Sunday, we'll be with Pastors Anton and Tanya and the Embassy Church here in Simferopol. I'm sure I will continue on this theme of the "Businessman's anointing" and "The anointing of Cyrus".
From London, UKJudy and I are in London this morning, on our way to Warsaw. We flew from Chicago last night, it was a pretty smooth flight except for a little turbulence just before we landed.
I have sensed the last few weeks I would be ministering on the subject of 'Kings and the Cyrus anointing.' Last night on the plane, I felt the Lord confirm this as I was praying about the meetings. We're expecting a powerful release of anointing for the business people in this church in Warsaw.
I received an email from Pastor Andrei just before we left that we'll be staying in the home of the lady who hosted me when I was in Warsaw in February. I'm looking forward to staying there again because this is not just an ordinary home.
Our host's name is Dorothy and she is a widow, her husband died just a few years ago. I learned that during WW II, her husband helped rescue Jews from the Nazis and after the war was awarded the status, 'Righeous Gentile' from the state of Israel.
She actually showed me the award certificate and medal he received from Israel.
Remember the movie from a few years ago, 'Schindler's List'? The movie is based on the true story of Oscar Schindler, a German entrepreneur, who operated a factory in Krakow, Poland during the war. He 'hired' Jews from the Krakow ghetto and in the end, was personally responsible for saving the lives of more than 1200 Jews from the Nazi extermination camps. For his merciful action, he, too, was awarded 'Righteous Gentile' from the state of Israel.
So Judy and I will be staying in the home of a man who rescued Jews from extermination. Is this a coincidence? Absolutely not. I believe the Lord has something very special for this time in Warsaw and this includes our host, Dorothy.
Since last August, Judy and I have made House of David, a messianic congregation, our home. It's been a revlatory (not sure if that is a real word) time, learning about what God is doing in these end times, restoring the Jew and Gentile believers as the One New Man, Ephesians 2:15, that will bring about the end time harvest and the return of Jesus Christ, our Messiah. I'll write more about this later.
On a different note, I've been helping Brian Moomey the past year or so develop a manual for pastors and church leaders. Actually, it's fruit from his ministry over the past 15 years or so. My part has been developing a marketing plan and build a web site that will help promote the manual aptly named,
His Touch Ministry Resource.
Like I told him the other day on the phone, 'Brian, I wouldn't have committed this much time and energy to this project if I didn't believe in it and see it's usefulness and value'. I am recommending it to you as I believe it is well worth your time to seriously consider purchasing a copy of this manual if you're involved in ministry in any type of pastoral role. Here is the link:
Pastoral Care Ministry Resource.
Brian is donating the profits from the sale of the manual to missions. I can tell you that he has supported this ministry prayerfully and financially as well as being directly involved in overseas mission work. Brian's life and ministry was radically changed three years ago after he went to Ukraine with me. Since that first trip, he returned 2 more times to Ukraine and traveled and ministered in Croatia twice as well.
Well, this has turned into a lengthy message, right? I'll write more once we get to Poland and are ministering.
Yushchenko vs Putin, a tale of two leadersI came across this article this morning, it's a very thoughtful comparison between two leaders, appropriately titled,
A Tale of Two Leaders.
The church in Poland, Storehouse, has an information link about our meetings in Warsaw:
News about business seminar in Warsaw.
In case you don't read Polish, here is the rough translation:

Joe Lehman has been working with FAi for two years, ministering in various cities on our behalf. He's in Ukraine right now and sent me an email this morning with a report from Konotop, where he has been for the last 6 days. Here's Joe's report:
"The week in Konotop was very fruitful, with lives being changed, inner healings, and the spiritual atmosphere being charged by His prophetic word.Pastor Olga and the people received me warmly, and responded well to the ministry."
"Pastor Pavel was there the first day and a half, and he also appreciated the word. I had given him a copy of my book 2 years ago when we were in Konotop. He told me he recently got it out and read it again and was much blessed."
"Also, Pastor Islan from Shoska was there for the seminar and invited me to have one in his town sometime."
"Tuesday we were in meetings about 10 hours with church leaders and workers. I shared on the 'Grace of Spiritual Authority' and on 'Qualities ofMature Leadership', and then answered questions and prayed for people. It was a fruitful time in God. We got back to the hotel about midnight and had to leave at 4 AM for the train station, to catch the early express back to Kiev."
I've been busy from the first of the year developing websites for our ministries. The first one,
Childrens Bread, is for the new ministry partnership between Curt Landry and myself. This is a new and exciting opportunity for Family Aid. For instance, last December when the tsunami wave and earthquake devestated Indonesia, our partnership ministry,
Childrens Bread, was part of a coalition of humanitarian funds that sent food, clothing and medicine totaling more than $20 million in retail value within the first few days after the disaster.
The second site,
Ukrainian Childrens Fund is a specialty site for fundraising our special projects for orphans in Ukraine. Presently, we have several containers in warehouse that we need the funds to ship them overseas.
Our latest website,
House of David has been finished and uploaded for your viewing. Our partnership with House of David Ministries has enabled us to participate in the sending of (12) 40-foot containers to Indonesia to help with the tsunami diaster relief.
The new version of
Christian Entrepreneurs Network web site is now operational. Comments about the new site are welcome. Thanks go to Egor Egorov and
Ensita for the new web design.
Family Aid International partnered in October '04 with House of David Ministries to form a new humanitarian fund called, "Childrens Bread". The new fund is now a member of a coalition of Christian humanitarian funds sending relief to the tsunami disaster area. The coalition consists of World Aid, Operation Compassion, Operation Blessing, Feed the Children and Childrens Bread. The web site will soon be operational. Watch for further announcements.
Check out the news site I have set up for Ukraine election news:

We are developing another website for a specific part of our ministry, the Christian Business Seminars. You can check out the
Chritian Entrepreneurs Network website. Plans to have a Russian version as well as English are in the future.
Pages have been recently updated on the web site, in particular, the
Home Page and the
Teams page.
The most recent newsletter is now available online at
FAI Newsletter. This issue is about the most recent trip to Uzhgorod and L'viv.
Just returned from Western Ukraine today. We held business seminars in two cities, Uzhgorod and L'viv. Over 1,000 people attended the meetings
Conferences in both cities were well received. On Thursday night, they jam packed the room we had rented and the ushers filled the halls with chairs until they ran out. Then people stood against the walls in the hall for 2 and half hours to listen. Last night, I rented the bigger hall, it wasn't available to me Thursday, and it had seating for 500 people. It was probably 3/4 full. I am planing on returning there this fall after I print my second book in Russian for samll business people.
Tomorrow, I speak at Anatoliy's church, then leave for USA on Monday afternoon. He loses his auditorium for sure the end of this month. They are looking and may have found another building and are looking at the possibility of buying some ground, too, for their own facility.
Arrived today in Kiev, its cold and snowing. Celebrated Christmas (its the 7th of January in Eastern Europe) with Pastor Anatoliy and his family this evening. Tomorrow night I will be speaking at Word of Grace church here. No change on the situation with the churches being blocked from meeting in the cinema buildings.

Pastor Anatoliy Belonozhko, director of Family Aid Int. in Ukraine, reported yesterday a serious situation developing in Kiev. He reported that most churches of the Embassy of God in Kiev have been barred from using their present public meeting halls for services. Of the few churches who were not barred, their rent was raised 3 times what it previously had been. He requests prayer from us.
